Long before 600-horsepower 911s became commonplace, RUF was already exploring how far the platform could be taken.
Introduced in the early 2000s, the Rturbo was RUF’s interpretation of the 996-generation Porsche 911 Turbo. Its twin-turbocharged flat-six was extensively developed by RUF, with increasingly powerful versions emerging as the programme evolved. But outright performance was only part of the appeal. Customers could work directly with RUF to create remarkably individual cars, combining significant mechanical upgrades with bespoke colours, materials and configurations.
This particular example is a genuine W09 RUF car, carrying RUF’s own manufacturer chassis designation rather than a Porsche VIN. It is an important distinction and one that places the car among those manufactured under RUF’s own identity in Pfaffenhausen.
An Extraordinary Specification
Even by RUF standards, this Rturbo was specified in an exceptionally individual manner.
Its original RUF documentation records a total price of €200,000, with an extensive list of mechanical, interior and exterior options.
Most striking is its PPG Harlequin Tinter Gold to Silver finish. The colour changes dramatically depending on its surroundings, transitioning between shades of gold, green and silver as light moves across the bodywork.
The cabin is no less distinctive. Tobacco Blue leather is paired with Marine Blue carpeting and an extensive carbon interior package. Further details include a RUF carbon sports steering wheel trimmed in matching Tobacco Blue leather, Turbo sports seats, an integrated RUF roll cage and white-faced instrumentation reading to 360 km/h.
Its original specification records an output of 650 PS, paired with a six-speed manual transmission featuring a long sixth gear. Öhlins suspension, ceramic brakes and a short-shift conversion were specified, alongside an extensive selection of lightweight components including Kevlar doors and bonnet, carbon exterior mirrors and a carbon rear spoiler.
It is the sort of specification that could only have emerged from a very particular vision and a close relationship with Pfaffenhausen.
Originally specified with four-wheel drive, the Rturbo returned to RUF in April 2010 at 23,490 kilometres, where it was converted to two-wheel drive.
The accompanying RUF invoice documents the conversion, including the removal of the front drivetrain components followed by wheel alignment and adjustment.
It is an important chapter in the car’s history. Rather than being a later third-party modification, its transformation to two-wheel drive was carried out by RUF themselves.
The car’s relationship with Pfaffenhausen continued well beyond its original build.
Its service book and accompanying invoices document repeated maintenance directly with RUF Automobile. A major service was carried out in June 2008 at 19,436 kilometres, including engine oil and filter, spark plugs and brake-system work.
Further visits to RUF are documented at 23,490 kilometres in 2010 and 30,983 kilometres in 2013.
In 2017, at approximately 32,700 kilometres, the car underwent another extensive visit to RUF. Documented work included a major service, spark plugs, ignition coils, drive belt, axle-drive oil and brake fluid, alongside cooling-system inspection and associated work.
An annual service followed at Porsche Zentrum Zürich in 2020 before another return to RUF in January 2021 at 34,698 kilometres for a major service, including drive-belt and gearbox-oil work.
The service book records another RUF visit in March 2023 at 36,544 kilometres, continuing a documented relationship with the company spanning much of the car’s life.
Its history file extends beyond servicing, with original RUF specification documentation, keys and even factory correspondence and material relating to its distinctive Tobacco Blue leather accompanying the car today.
Today, the 996 generation is enjoying renewed appreciation for its compact dimensions and analogue character. The Rturbo represents a much rarer interpretation of that formula, created by a manufacturer whose relationship with the Porsche 911 stretches back decades.
This example takes that philosophy considerably further.
A W09 RUF car, documented with 650 PS, a six-speed manual gearbox, Öhlins suspension, ceramic brakes and extensive carbon and Kevlar components, before later being converted to two-wheel drive by RUF themselves. All of it wrapped in one of the most distinctive colour combinations imaginable.
More than two decades after it was commissioned, its unusual specification, low mileage and extensive RUF documentation make it a fascinating example from one of the most significant periods in the company's history.
