2003 Honda NSX Type R (NA2R)

By the time the Honda NSX Type R (NA2) arrived in 2002, the foundation had already been laid by the original NA1R. Widely regarded as one of the purest driver’s cars ever built, the NSX Type R had already cemented its place in automotive history. The NA2 was not a reinvention, but a careful and deliberate evolution of that philosophy.

Honda refined every aspect of the NA1 formula. The engine grew to 3.2 litres, now paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox, delivering stronger mid-range performance while retaining the razor-sharp throttle response that defined the original. Internally, the engine components were carefully balanced and assembled to tighter tolerances, ensuring a smoother, more precise power delivery at high revs.

Chassis development was equally focused. The NA2 benefitted from further rigidity improvements, revised suspension tuning and aerodynamic enhancements that brought the car even closer to Honda’s motorsport ambitions. One of the most defining visual and functional changes was the introduction of the fixed headlights, replacing the earlier pop-up design. This allowed for improved aerodynamics and reduced weight at the front of the car.

The NA2 Type R also introduced a number of distinctive lightweight components, most notably the carbon fibre hood with integrated S-duct, designed to manage airflow more effectively at speed, and the signature rear wing that improved high-speed stability. These elements were not cosmetic additions, but functional upgrades developed with track performance in mind.

Presented here is a 2003 NA2 Type R, finished in the rarely seen Berlina Black over black interior, offering a more understated and purposeful aesthetic compared to the traditional Championship White. With just 43,200 km, this example has been carefully preserved and represents one of the more desirable specifications of the NA2R.

The car was first registered in Japan in 2003 and is documented to have spent much of its early life in the Kansai region, around Kobe and Osaka. This adds an additional layer of provenance to a car that is already highly regarded among collectors.

Inside, the NSX cockpit remains one of the most driver-focused environments ever created. Inspired by the visibility and ergonomics of an F16 fighter jet, it offers a clarity of vision and control that few cars can match. This same driving position became iconic through footage of Ayrton Senna pushing the NSX to its limits, reinforcing its connection to one of the greatest drivers of all time.

Today, the NA2 Type R is seen as the final and most complete expression of the NSX Type R lineage. With production numbers limited and demand continuing to grow globally, these cars have become increasingly difficult to source, particularly in rare specifications such as this.
