Few homologation specials have become as instantly recognisable as the Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II.
Created to homologate Mercedes-Benz’s latest weapon for the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft, just 502 examples of the Evolution II were produced in 1990, all finished in Blue-Black Metallic. Beneath its unmistakable aerodynamic package sits a high-revving 2.5-litre 16-valve four-cylinder producing 235 PS, while the road car provided the foundation for the formidable DTM machines that followed.
Its towering rear wing and aggressively widened bodywork may have looked outrageous on a Mercedes-Benz in 1990, but virtually every element served a purpose. The Evolution II represented the ultimate development of the W201 for competition and would become closely associated with one of touring-car racing's great eras, culminating in Klaus Ludwig's 1992 DTM championship.
